| The winner of the Minnesota MAEOPP Board of Directors Scholarship is Nuredin Ali, an SSS student from Minnesota State University, Mankato. Nuredin is pursuing a degree in Urban Planning so that he can obtain a career in Urban Development. Not only is he an outstanding student, but Nuredin is also involved as the vice-president of the Somali Student Association, and has contributed to the Somali youth-Violence Rally and Jumpstart, which is a program to help young kids enjoy reading and writing. "Student Support Services has had a major impact on my education because this is the only program that has defined my college career," Nuredin says. His father passed away when he was only nine months old and he says that he "had to take on my father's role." He came to the United States when he was 18 by himself, for his entire family is still in Somalia. He says, "My family is the reason why I wake up every morning...and I don't know where their next meal comes from."
