The following MN TRiO participants were awarded scholarships in the 2010 competition:

Lisa Burg, Paul and Sheila Wellstone Memorial Scholarship Recipient

The recipient of the $800 Minnesota TRiO Paul and Sheila Wellstone Memorial Scholarship is Lisa Burg. Lisa is very involved in her school and community. However, since Lisa was ten years old, she has battled a serious blood disease called Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). With Lisa’s determination and the support of her family and the TRiO programs, her goal was not only to “survive but to thrive.” She says, the support of the TRiO Educational Talent Search program at MSU Mankato “has really helped me shape my future.” Lisa Burg looks forward to attending Augsburg College or Winona State University next year to study Accounting.

The recipient of the Minnesota TRiO Bruce Vento Memorial Scholarship for $800 goes to Patrick Tinsley. Patrick is a senior at Humboldt Secondary School in St. Paul and a participant in the St. Olaf TRiO Upward Bound program. Though Patrick has felt that he often lacked support at home towards his future goals, he states that his participation in “TRiO Upward Bound gave (him) a sense of belonging.

Patrick says, “I believe that a ‘home’ is a place where people care about you and want to see you succeed in life. For me, my home has always been with the St. Olaf TRiO Upward Bound program. I always had one thing to look forward to and that was TRiO Upward Bound. They gave me a future to look forward to; without them, I don’t think I would have succeeded.” Patrick Tinsley will be attending St. Olaf College next year and is interested in studying pre-law or political science.
